The 35-year-old has set a date for when he plans to retire from playing for the Argentina national team.

Angel Di Maria has declared that the upcoming 2024 Copa America will mark the end of his illustrious journey with the national team.

The South American tournament will take place in the United States from June 20 to July 14.

“I will leave the Argentina national team after the Copa America. It’s over for me, it will be the last tournament,” Di Maria told Argentinian radio station Urbana Play 104.3.

The 35-year-old winger also revealed that his return to Benfica in the summer was partly motivated by his desire to stay sharp for the Copa America.

His announcement comes after a career punctuated by pivotal moments. He has been an ever-present figure for Argentina since debuting in 2008, scoring crucial goals in the finals of the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup.

In total, Di Maria has earned 134 caps for the national team. His tally of 29 goals and 29 assists has helped Argentina win the Copa America and World Cup titles.

The Benfica star’s other achievements include a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics and the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2007.
