The Red Devils could be forced to play without their No.1 goalkeeper during the continental tournament.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly leaning towards representing Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The AFCON tournament is scheduled to commence on January 13, and if Onana chooses to participate, it could leave Erik ten Hag without his primary goalkeeper for a crucial month.

Onana, who joined Manchester United from Inter Milan for £47.2 million in the summer, initially faced challenges at Old Trafford but has recently shown resilience with consecutive Premier League clean sheets against Fulham and Luton Town.

Despite reports of talks between United chiefs and Onana regarding his AFCON plans, the Mirror claims the club may be unable to prevent him from playing. If Onana participates in the tournament, he could potentially miss up to four Premier League games.

Cameroon, last crowned AFCON champions in 2017, is considered among the favourites for the upcoming tournament, aiming to secure their sixth title and move closer to all-time record holders Egypt. The Indomitable Lions will compete against Gambia, Guinea, and Senegal in Group C of the tournament.

United’s backup goalkeepers, Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindir, have limited game time since joining the club, creating additional concerns for the team in Onana’s potential absence.
