The Cameroonian goalkeeper was at the center of a big VAR decision on his Premier League debut for Manchester United.
Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, insists Wolves did not deserve a late penalty in Monday’s match.
The Premier League game at Old Trafford ended 1-0 in United’s favor. Raphael Varane’s 76th-minute header secured all three points, handing Onana a dream debut.
Yet, it wasn’t without controversy. In the dying minutes of the game, Wolves had a penalty appeal waived away. They protested when Onana appeared to clatter into Sasa Kalajdzic. But, following a VAR review, the referee chose not to award the Wanderers a spot-kick.
The decision left Gary O’Neil fuming. The Wolves manager was adamant that Onana fouled Kalajdzic. He even claimed that the Premier League referees’ boss Jon Moss apologized to him afterward.
When asked if Wolves should’ve had a penalty, Onana replied: “No. Goalkeepers make decisions, sometimes you are right, sometimes you are not.
“I made a decision and I am responsible for everything. For me, it was contact between two big guys and nothing happened.”
He added: “Of course, I was confident [it would not be given)]”
With a clean sheet on his Premier League debut, Onana will now prepare for Saturday. He will likely be in goal again when United visit Tottenham Hotspur.
