The Black Stars captain has opened up on why AFCON glory has eluded the nation for four decades.
Andre Ayew believes Ghana’s failure to win an Africa Cup of Nations title for the last 40 years is more a question of luck than anything else.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Ghana’s last AFCON triumph in Libya in 1982. The West Africans have since reached the final of the competitions three times (1992, 2010, and 2015), but lost on each occasion.
In the previous tournament in 2019, they failed to progress past the last-16 stage in Egypt.
‘I think we have been unlucky’
Speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of Ghana’s Group C opener against Morocco in their latest AFCON campaign, however, Ayew played down concerns over the title drought.
“I wouldn’t say there is a problem, I think we have been unlucky in the last editions,” said the captain.
“I think we have the best African record of the team getting in the last four or the finals in the last 10 to 15 years. I think we have been unlucky and we have to keep working hard and one day we will get there.”
After facing Morocco on Monday, Ghana will face Gabon this Friday and Comoros next Tuesday for their remaining Group C fixtures.
