A humiliating night at the Montilivi has dented Real Madrid’s prospects of retaining their LaLiga crown.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti believes his side paid a dear price for a lack of defensive commitment and teamwork against Girona.

On Tuesday, Girona stunned Real Madrid in a 4-2 home victory. Taty Castellanos scored all four goals for the Catalan club. Vinicius Junior and Lucas Vazquez did pull two goals back for Ancelotti’s side, but their strikes ultimately came to nothing.

“It’s tough because when you lose it has to be tough,” Ancelotti said after the final whistle.

“The game was bad in defense and that has been the key, because we did well with the ball, especially at the beginning. But we weren’t forceful in duels, they caught us on two counters… and from there, everything became more difficult.

“We tried to come back individually, not as a team, because today the team has not played. The individual level was also below normal, but not just for some, in general. The level was very low.”

The defeat means Real Madrid could slip 14 points behind Barcelona in the LaLiga standings if the table-toppers topple Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday evening.
