Ancelotti has demanded his Everton side make a strong response after their shock defeat to already-relegated Sheffield on Sunday.
Carlo Ancelotti has demanded a strong reaction from his Everton team, after their worst performance of the season which he branded “embarrassing”.
The Italian conceded yet another home defeat, this time by rock-bottom Sheffield United, has seriously damaged their European hopes.
But with two games left they are three points behind Spurs in potentially the second Europa League spot in the table, and the Italian wants his players to “fight” to prove they are better than Sunday’s Goodison disaster.
“We lost a great opportunity for Europe, but now we have to show a reaction and fight to the end,” Ancelotti said as per the club’s website.
“We have to win the two (remaining) games, and then we will see if we are in Europe or not. We have shown a reaction before after losing at home, and now we need to do it again.”
Everton face Wolves on Wednesday night at Goodison, and Ancelotti knows their home form has seriously undermined the European goal he set for his team at the start of the season.
Only relegated Fulham have earned fewer home Premier League points in 2021, with the Blues taking a shocking six points from a possible 33.
Ancelotti insisted there must be changes to his side next season – with spending on quality new players regardless of whether they make it into Europe or not.
“If we are, we will build a squad to be in Europe. If we’re not, we’ll build a squad to be better in the Premier League,” he said.
“If we are able to qualify for Europe, it will be a step forward quicker. I think we have improved compared to last season and we have to still improve for the next season.”
After welcoming Wolves on Wednesday night, Everton will finish their Premier League season at the champions Manchester City.
