Former Premier League footballer Tony Cascarino sent out heavy criticism towards Alisson after his terrible mistakes against Manchester City.
Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been a key player for Liverpool ever since his arrival back in 2018. The 28-year-old’s wonderful performances have even granted him the title of FIFA’s Best Goalkeeper in the previous seasons.
However, Alisson featured in two horrible mistakes at Liverpool’s recent clash against Manchester City. In fact, even Jurgen Klopp suggested that the goalkeeper’s decisions took a huge toll on the club’s aspirations to take home the win.
This Monday, Alisson received further criticism after former Aston Villa and Chelsea player Tony Cascarino lashed out at the player after Liverpool’s defeat. Cascarino wrote in The Times about the goalkeeper’s over-confidence and how it affected his team.
“A couple of weeks ago I wrote that Alisson has to stop thinking he is Virgil van Dijk, taking on his mantle, and looking after the passing at the back for Liverpool. What he was doing was high risk and he was taking on a responsibility that was way beyond what he should be doing.
He was made to pay for that – and it was just so unnecessary. On one of the goals, he did it twice in the same move, and then three minutes later he does it again.”
Alisson was compared to Liverpool outcast Loris Karius.
Loris Karius has been sidelined from the Reds’ squad ever since his terrible performance in the Champions League final. To those who don’t remember the match, the German goalkeeper made some serious mistakes. In fact, Karius’ misfortunes clearly ended helping Real Madrid seal another European title. According to Cascarino, Alisson’s mistakes were more than comparable to the ones his predecessor featured in.
“It was a Loris Karius Champions League final performance. It was that bad. Karius got discarded for that performance which won’t happen to Alisson because he is a great keeper. But that is what he has to concentrate on now, being a great keeper.”
