After the Newcastle United takeover was made official, we all needed to hear from the Magpies’ biggest legend himself: Mr. Alan Shearer.
Alan Shearer is the quintessential Newcastle United legend who represented the club for many years during the Premier League era. He is the all-time goal-scorer of this tournament and most of his magical nights took place at St. James’ Park. It’s only natural that the club’s supporters would ask for Shearer’s seal of approval in this massive takeover. Yesterday, the league made Newcastle United’s purchase official as Saudi Arabian owners turn it into the wealthiest club in the world.
That’s right, they even have more money than PSG and Manchester City combined. Although the Premier League already confirmed they have a legal document that forbids the country of Saudi Arabia to interfere. But Newcastle United will definitely get a massive economic boost that will transform them into a strong transfer market competitor overnight. As Newcastle’s biggest legend, Alan Shearer completely understands what the supporters are going through. After 14 years of misery, the former striker felt relief after the announcement was made.
Shearer is mostly happy for the Newcastle supporters.
During an interview on BBC Radio Five Live, here’s what Alan Shearer said about the takeover: “I tweeted maybe a couple of hours ago when the deal was done we can dare to hope again. That’s exactly what it is because all we’ve done is tick along and survive for 14 years. We’ve had no real ambition other than to survive, cup competitions have just been non-existent for Newcastle United. This city, this football club and particularly our fans deserve better because they’re so loyal, they love their football club and their life is Newcastle United. It all depends on whether Newcastle United win on a Saturday, that means fans will have a good week.
“They work hard all week and spend their money to have a good time, and having a good time is spending money on Newcastle United. I understand totally why there is so much happiness in the city today and I’m exactly the same. I understand also that questions have to be asked with the human rights issues, it’s really important we don’t brush it under the carpet. We have to educate ourselves and this I think this will only highlight it even more. Our fans need to know they matter. For 14 years, they haven’t and that’s why it’s such a special day for them today.”
