Alan Shearer believes the ‘obsession’ with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has prevented the public from seeing Salah’s quality.

Mohamed Salah has enjoyed incredible form this season, contributing to Liverpool’s success in both domestic and European stages. The Egyptian star has already registered 20 goals in his 21 appearances, breaking several records in the process.

On Wednesday, Salah scored for Liverpool in their 2-1 win over Milan in the Champions League. By taking his goal tally to 20, Salah equalled a 34-year record held by Ian Rush. Before the Egyptian star, only Rush had managed to net more than 20 goals in five consecutive seasons for Liverpool.

Last month, Salah finished seventh in the 2021 Ballon d’Or rankings, which drew criticism from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. Newcastle and England legend Alan Shearer also believes Salah’s ranking is unfair.

In an interview with The Athletic, Premier League’s all-time top scorer said: “Mohamed Salah is the best in the world right now. The best goalscorer and the best player, full stop.

“The little magician is doing his stuff in the best league in the world and he’s doing it the against the best teams and in the biggest games. Week-in week-out, year-in year-out, Salah performs magic.

“How he came seventh in the latest Ballon d’Or voting is anybody’s guess. There’s an obsession with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, which is understandable given how dominant they’ve been over the modern era, but if you gave me a choice of any player for my team it would be Salah.”

Salah leads the goalscoring charts in the Premier League as the Reds sit second on the table. Liverpool will face Aston Villa in their next league game on Saturday as club legend Steven Gerrard returns to Anfield.
