Alan Shearer explains how Harry Kane has evolved into an all-rounder

The England skipper has contributed towards 76% of Tottenham’s goals to help instigate a Premier League title bid.

Harry Kane’s all-round game has ‘really impressed’ Alan Shearer, who noted how the prolific marksman has become a ‘creator and defender’ for Tottenham this season.

The Premier League season hasn’t even reached the halfway stage, yet Kane is already on the brink of registering double figures in terms of goals and assists for the first time in his career.

The 27-year-old’s contributions have proved invaluable for Spurs, having made up 76% of their 25 goals in the league so far.

“Tottenham have lost twice [to Liverpool and Leicester] in the past seven days, and it’s no coincidence that Harry Kane had a quiet game on both occasions,” Shearer wrote on BBC Sport.

“I still think Spurs are serious title contenders despite those defeats by Liverpool and Leicester, but for them to start firing again after Christmas, they will need Kane back on top form.

“His attacking contribution with nine goals and 10 assists in 14 Premier League games for Tottenham this season has been amazing and is a big reason they are at the top end of the table – when he plays well, Spurs usually do too.”

The Newcastle legend, who scored a record 260 Premier League goals during his own career, empathized on Kane’s all-round development.

The Englishman’s 20 clearances this season is the best of any forward in the English top-flight. His playmaking abilities, meanwhile, have been hard to ignore with a league-best of 10 assists.

Shearer added: “It is the England captain’s all-round game that has really impressed me in the past few months, though, because I have noticed what he does at the other end of the pitch too.

“I still see Kane as a goalscorer – you have to, because of the sheer number he gets – but it shows how good he is that he is also a creator and defender for Spurs.

“It is rare to see such an effective, attacking all-rounder in any circumstances, but on top of that he is the ultimate team player too, willing to do whatever is asked of him.”
