A lineup decision by Eric Ten Hag has caused controversy around Ajax players’ activities on trading platforms.

Unusual transactions from a number of Ajax players had led many to believe they have used inside information to trade NFTs (non-fundable tokens).

Ajax lost 2-1 against PSV Eindhoven in the KNVB Cup final on Sunday. Maarten Stekelenburg started between Ajax’s post as he replaced Andre Onana in Erik ten Hag’s lineup.

While the decision seemed normal for a Cup game, it reminded Ajax fans of two transactions from Daley Blind and Davy Klaassen on the Sorare platform.

Both players had bought an NFT of Stekelenburg two days ago while selling their token of Onana. As soon as the Eredivisie giants published their starting lineup, many speculated the Ajax pair had used inside information for trading.

Ajax boss Eric ten Hag insisted it is unlikely that his players had known about the starting lineup.

“I wouldn’t know. I will not announce the lineup until Sunday morning.”

According to reports from Dutch sources, KNVB are closely monitoring the situation. Participating in gambling activities is prohibited for players, coaches, and game officials.

However, with the cryptocurrency market still being highly unregulated, it won’t be easy to launch an investigation around the transactions.
