The Dutch giants are preparing to bolster their backline after the possible exit of one of their best defenders.

Ajax are reportedly considering a move for Calvin Bassey as they look to replace Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine star’s move to United is ‘imminent’ according to various reports from English media. Given his key role in Ajax’s defensive line, the Eredivisie champions have already started their efforts to sign a new defender.

According to TalkSport, Ajax are preparing to sign Rangers’ Calvin Bassey as one of their main candidates to replace Martinez.

A product of Leicester City’s academy, Bassey left the foxes to kick-start his senior career at Rangers in July 2020. Two years later, the Nigeria star is one of the most promising young defenders in the Scottish league.

He helped the Gers win the Scottish Premiership in the 2020-21 season while establishing himself as a regular starter. Last season he made a total of 50 appearances for the Scottish giants, who reached the Europa League final.

Ajax are not the only club in the race to sign the Super Eagles star. Several Premier League sides, including Wolves, Brentford, and Chelsea are also closely following Bassey’s situation.

A £20m offer will most likely be enough to bring the 22-year-old to the Johan Cruijff Arena. However, the Dutch giants are yet to submit their first formal bid for the versatile defender.
