The tournament will take place alongside the African Champions League games.
Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek have expressed their excitement over joining the African Super League.
Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced their decision to kick-start a new continental tournament on Sunday. The games will start in August 2023, with the African governing body allocating $100 million as Super League’s prize money.
An official statement from CAF reads: “The competition will breathe new life into African club competition.
“Winners and participants of the inaugural African Super League will receive significant prize money and profits from the tournament.”
Ahly executive director Saad Shalaby expressed his support for the new tournament.
“There was an invitation from the CAF president to Mahmoud Al-Khatib to talk about development in African football,” Shalaby said (via Ahram Online).
“One of the proposals was the establishment of the African Super League.
“We do not know anything about the tournament so far. But we support any development in African football, especially since there are huge financial prizes.”
Al Ahly’s city-rivals Zamalek also welcomed the idea, saying the club feel positive about the new tournament.
“The African Champions League has become unrewarding because its prizes are very weak. It is close to one contract of a Zamalek player,” the club’s football supervisor Amir Mortada said.
“We do not have information about the Super League yet, but we feel positive about it.”
