Only a few days after the shocking death of Raphael Dwamena, African football mourns another young player.

African football faces another heartbreaking blow with the untimely passing of former Zimbabwean goalkeeper George Chigova at the age of 32.

Chigova, who earned 32 caps for his nation between 2011 and 2019, succumbed to suspected heart problems just four months after a previous cardiac incident.

Chigova’s club career saw him don the colours of Dynamos, Supersport United, and Polokwane City. As news of the former goalkeeper spread, tributes poured in, with his former club Dynamos expressing grief and bidding farewell to the talented shot-stopper.

This tragic event follows the recent passing of another Zimbabwean football icon, Rahman Gumbo, who died at 59 from a suspected heart attack. The Zimbabwean FA has announced that the Warriors will wear black armbands during their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers to honour Gumbo’s legacy.

These losses cast a sombre shadow over African football, coming shortly after the death of former Ghanaian international Raphael Dwamena, who suffered a fatal heart attack during a match in Albania.

Zimbabwe will face Nigeria in their next World Cup qualifier on Sunday. The Warriors haven’t qualified for the 2023 AFCON, which takes place in mid-January, with their next official match being another World Cup qualifying clash against Lesotho in June next year.
