After coming so close to winning the Africa Cup of Nations as a footballer, Aliou Cisse has gone one better as a manager.

‘I am African champion’ declared a proud Aliou Cisse as the Senegal manager opened up on leading the Lions of Teranga to a first AFCON title.

There is perhaps nobody who can appreciate what AFCON success means to Senegal more than Cisse. His quest to end the West African nation’s wait for a first title lasted over 20 years. He came close as a player in the 2002 final, only to miss the decisive penalty in a shootout defeat to Cameroon. Then came 2019, where – as a manager – he led the team to its second final. But like 17 years earlier, Senegal suffered heartache as Algeria bettered them.

That 65-year wait for a first AFCON title, however, ended on Sunday as the Lions of Teranga beat Egypt 4-2 in a nail-biting penalty shootout final after finishing 0-0 at the end of extra time.

The triumph sparked euphoric celebrations at the Olembe Stadium in Cameroon and across Senegal.

Reflecting on ending his long and difficult quest for the first time in a press conference afterward, Cisse said: “I am African champion. It was long, it was difficult, sometimes complicated, but we never gave up.

“I dedicate this victory to the Senegalese people. For years, we have been chasing this cup. Today we will be able to put a star on our jersey.

“Winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon has a special meaning. Winning against the most successful team in Africa is another symbol.”

Cisse and his 2021 AFCON title-winning squad will face Egypt again in a two-legged World Cup playoff between March 23-29.
