The Moroccan star went straight to the FIFA president to criticise the refereeing of the World Cup’s bronze-medal match.

Achraf Hakimi has expressed his regret over confronting FIFA president Gianni Infantino after Morocco’s defeat against Croatia.

Morocco failed to clinch World Cup’s bronze medal when they lost 2-1 against Croatia on Saturday.

Josko Gvardiol put Croatia ahead, but a quick equaliser from Achraf Dari brought Morocco back into the game.

Mislav Orsic then restored Croatia’s lead with a fantastic shot a few minutes before half-time.

Following a header from Youssef En-Nesyri in the second half, Moroccan players expected the referee to award them a penalty to score another equaliser.

But Abdulrahman Al-Jassim’s decision to continue the game angered Hakimi, who confronted Infantino about the scene after the game.

Hakimi has now apologised for his post-match reaction, insisting he has a lot of respect for the FIFA president.

“Nothing happened,” he told reporters.

“I was angry after the end of the match. I went to talk to him, and I apologised for the words I said to him. He is my friend and I respect him a lot, so nothing happened.”

Morocco missed out on the third place, but that won’t undermine their incredible achievements in the 2022 World Cup.

The Atlas Lions became the first-ever African side to reach the tournament’s final four when they defeated Portugal in the quarter-final.
