Let’s check out the player ratings from the Serie A clash between AC Milan and Genoa over at the San Siro.

A second-half own goal was enough to grab AC Milan a slender 2-1 win over Genoa on Sunday afternoon.

With star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended, and Mario Mandzukic not fully fit, Rafael Leao got the nod from Stefano Pioli to head the Milan attack in what was a must-win affair.

Ante Rebic, however, was the man to put the Rossoneri in front. The Croatian brilliantly scored from 20 yards out in only the 13th-minute for his seventh goal of the season. However, Genoa were far from finished and set about launching a comeback.

Davide Ballardini’s men, who were without suspended captain Domenico Criscito and an injured Luca Pellegrini, defended well afterward and reaped the benefits for their patience by drawing level before the break.

Mattia Destro was the man of the moment. The club’s top scorer overpowered Fikayo Tomori to head in Miha Zajc’s corner in the 37th-minute. It was his second goal in as many games after previously suffering a six-match goalless drought.

Own goal settles the tie

Despite mostly dominating the opening period, Milan conceded an equalizer. The hosts, therefore, entered the second half determined to make amends, knowing how costly any dropped points could be.

The Rossoneri continued to put Genoa under immense pressure, but struggled to score. Rebic and Simon Kjaer both came close before a stroke of luck came in the form of a rather bizarre own goal.

Calhanoglu fired a corner-kick that spun past substitute Mandzukic, hit the back of Genoa striker Gianluca Scamacca, and deflected past the keeper Mattia Perin to find it’s way into the goal.

It wasn’t the smoothest of victories, but Pioli’s side pushed hard for that second goal and arguably deserved it.

The 2-1 win also means Milan remain in second-place in Serie A for this weekend ahead of Wednesday’s match against Sassuolo at San Siro.

Genoa, on the other hand, stay in 13th-place and seven points above the relegation zone ahead of the final seven games of the season.
