Ole Solskjaer watched in delight as Manchester United put nine goals past a nine-man Southampton team at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Wan-Bissaka, Rashford and Cavani all scored within the space of 21 minutes to put the game beyond doubt already. A Bednarek own-goal in between saw United take a 4-0 lead into the break.
Solskjaer put Martial in place of Cavani for the second half. The Frenchman bagged a brace while goals from, McTominay, Fernandes and Daniel James completed the rout.
It was heartbreak for Southampton who have now lost by that scoreline twice. Back in October 2019, Leicester did the same to Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side at the King Power game.
Speaking after the game, the United boss was pleased with the all-round performance of his side.
“We moved the ball really well, quickly. We used the width, we had movements in behind, we had strikers who wanted to get on the end of it scoring goals – even had full-backs wanting to be on the end of it. Solskjaer said to the club’s website.
“It was one of those performances you once in a while get and you enjoy. I am sure everyone enjoyed being out there in a Man United shirt.”
“We’ve been waiting for them to show their magic and tonight was the night that they could go and enjoy. We haven’t had too many of them where you can sit down in the second half and enjoy the football. They enjoyed it and [there were] some good performances.”
The win over Southampton is the club’s biggest victory in 26 years.
The 9-0 win repeated the victory by the same score-line against Ipswich Town back in 1995. Andy Cole scored five goals on that occasion.
Solskjaer added: “Yes, 1995 wasn’t it? We shared the goals more between the boys than he did [Andy Cole, who scored five].”
“That was just before I came. Of course, we had an easier task with them getting a sending off so early but still, it is never easy to break teams down when they sit back and defend with 10 men and I thought we were excellent.”
Solskjaer also singled out his two full-backs for a brilliant display as both names either had a goal or assist against Southampton.
“Brilliant. Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] kept going in there at the back post and Luke [Shaw] kept putting crosses in, which we’ve asked him to do. I thought they did well. It’s always hard when they [sit] just outside the box. It was about getting quality and width and we did.”
