The Major League Soccer will expand to 30 teams for the 2025 season.
The city of San Diego has secured its very own MLS franchise.
The commissioner of the American league, Don Garber, revealed the exciting news at the 35,000-capacity Snapdragon Stadium, which the San Diego team will call home starting in 2025.
This expansion team will be owned by none other than Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour. The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation joins him as a co-owner. The Sycuan Tribe will make history as the first Native American tribe to co-own a U.S. professional soccer team. San Diego Padres baseball star Manny Machado will also come on board.
“We are thrilled to welcome San Diego to Major League Soccer as our 30th team,” Garber said.
“For many years we have believed San Diego would be a terrific MLS market due to its youthful energy, great diversity, and the fact that soccer is an essential part of everyday life for so many people. Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Tribe have an incredible vision for building a club that will inspire and unite soccer fans throughout the city and region.”
Brad Termini (Co-founder, Zephyr Partners); Tom Vernon (Founder, Right to Dream) and Dan Dickinson (Board Member, Right to Dream) are the other founding members.
The new MLS franchise has also announced that Tom Penn, former LAFC President, will be taking the reins as CEO. The team will reveal its name and crest at a later date.
