As the January transfer window approaches, football fans are dreaming of the perfect signings to strengthen their favorite teams.
Yet, there are always those moves that, while ideal for the player or the club, are unlikely to materialize due to frustrating circumstances. Here’s a look at seven dream transfers that make sense on paper but are unlikely to happen this winter.
1. Kylian Mbappé to Liverpool
Kylian Mbappé’s first season at Real Madrid has been a mixed bag. Playing out of position as a striker instead of his favored left-wing role has hampered his impact, particularly with Vinícius Júnior thriving in that position. A move to Liverpool could be transformative.
Under Arne Slot’s counter-attacking system, Mbappé’s pace and eye for goal would make him a perfect fit on the left wing. However, with Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo already excelling in that role, Liverpool has little incentive to pursue the French superstar.
2. Arda Güler to Borussia Dortmund
Turkish wonderkid Arda Güler has struggled for game time at Real Madrid, and a loan move in January could provide him the development he desperately needs. Borussia Dortmund seems like the perfect destination, with their strong track record of nurturing young talent and their current struggles creating opportunities for a player like Güler.
Despite the logical fit, Real Madrid missed the chance to orchestrate this move in the summer, leaving Güler’s January prospects uncertain.
3. Sergio Ramos Back to Real Madrid
Real Madrid’s defensive injuries, with Éder Militão and David Alaba sidelined, have left their backline stretched thin. A short-term return for Sergio Ramos, now a free agent, seems like the perfect solution.
Ramos, who averaged an impressive 7.34 Sofascore rating last season with Sevilla, brings invaluable experience and leadership. However, Florentino Pérez’s strict stance against re-signing aging players means this dream move is unlikely to happen.
4. Viktor Gyökeres to Manchester United
With Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Manchester United, speculation has grown about reuniting with Viktor Gyökeres, who thrived under Amorim’s system at Sporting CP. The Swedish striker’s adaptability and clinical finishing could be the answer to United’s attacking woes.
Yet, Amorim has categorically ruled out bringing any players from Sporting this winter, dashing fans’ hopes of this reunion.
5. N’Golo Kanté to Manchester City
Manchester City’s midfield has felt the impact of Rodri’s absence due to injuries, and the addition of N’Golo Kanté could provide the perfect blend of defensive solidity and ball-winning ability. His standout performances in the 2021 UCL final and the Euros prove he still has plenty to offer.
However, City’s midfield depth and concerns about balancing Rodri and Kanté in the squad make this move unlikely, despite its obvious appeal.
6. Lionel Messi to Barcelona
Lionel Messi’s return to Barcelona on a six-month loan from Inter Miami would be a fairytale reunion for fans. With no matches lined up for Messi during the MLS off-season, the timing feels perfect.
Yet, the logistics of such a move are daunting. Barcelona’s ongoing financial challenges and Messi’s preference for less intense systems undercut the feasibility of this dream scenario.
7. Caoimhin Kelleher to Chelsea
Chelsea’s impressive scoring form this season has been undermined by shaky performances from goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. Liverpool’s backup keeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, has proven he’s ready for a starting role, particularly with his Champions League heroics keeping Liverpool unbeaten in Europe.
But convincing Kelleher to leave a thriving Liverpool side would require an exceptional offer, making this transfer feel like an unlikely betrayal of his current team.
