The former Liverpool midfielder has emerged as a possible replacement for Klopp ahead of the next season.
Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has expressed his concerns over Xabi Alonso’s possible return to Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.
The German manager will end his glorious spell at the club at the end of the campaign. Since Klopp’s shocking interview earlier this week, speculations have intensified over Liverpool’s search for their next manager.
Alonso’s stellar performance at Bayer Leverkusen has catapulted him to the forefront of candidates to succeed Klopp. But Johnson fears his former teammate might still lack the experience to take on the managerial job at Anfield.
“I’d be a bit scared to appoint Xabi Alonso or Steven Gerrard. The next appointment is going to be really tough and I’d be worried about bringing someone in with so little experience,” Johnson told Squawka.
He added: “Of course, in football timing is everything and this kind of dream job may not open up for them again so they’ll be tempted to take it, it will just be very hard to have the kind of success Klopp did.”
Since his arrival in 2015, Klopp has led the Reds to seven trophies, including a historic Premier League title in 2019. The German boss is yet to announce his next destination amid reports linking him with a number of elite sides.
