The Red Devils edged out the League Two sides in a tough FA Cup clash.
Manchester United defeated Newport County 4-2 in their FA Cup match on Sunday. United’s display was far from ideal, but Erik ten Hag’s men got the job done to reach the competition’s fifth round.
What happened?
United’s bright start to the game paid off when they scored two early goals to get ahead at Rodney Parade. First, Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with a brilliant low shot from the edge of the box in the seventh minute. The visitors then made it 2-0 through Kobbie Mainoo, who scored his maiden goal for the Red Devils six minutes later.
United pushed to extend their lead, but it was Newport County who got back into the game when Bryn Morris rifled an unstoppable shot past Altay Bayindir from outside the box.
The hosts then stunned United as they found the equalizer only two minutes into the second period. It took United until the 68th minute to finally restore their lead through Antony. The goal motivated Newport County to push for a second equalizer, but the Red Devils put the victory to bed when Rasums Hojlund made it 4-2 in the 94th minute.
