The Spurs coach has made the club’s stance on the upcoming transfer window clear after one of his key players suffered a big injury.
Cristian Romero’s hamstring injury won’t change Tottenham’s transfer plans in January, according to manager Ange Postecoglou.
Romero faces up to five weeks on the sidelines because of a hamstring problem. The defender suffered the injury in the 2-1 win over Everton last weekend, coming off at half-time. His absence will be a blow for Postecoglou, especially as he had recently returned from a three-game suspension.
This setback came at a time when reports regularly suggest that Spurs will try to sign a new center-back in January.
“No, it doesn’t change anything,” Postecoglou said when asked if Romero’s injury will change the club’s transfer plans.
“Disappointing to lose him, for sure. We missed him with the suspension and now, we’d just got him back and kind of steadied things up and we have him missing again for quite a chunk of time.
“But it doesn’t change really… you can’t accelerate time. It’s still December. January 1 stays January 1 irrespective of our situation. The plans and the planning are still in the same shape.”
Tottenham also lost Micky van de Ven, another defender, to a hamstring injury in November. Postecoglou has said the Dutchman is close to returning, but he won’t know how well the player has recovered until he has seen him in training.
Various reports have linked the London club with moves for Jean-Clair Todibo (Nice), Radu Dragusin (Genoa), Lloud Kelly (Bournemouth), and Tosin Adarabioyo (Fulham) this winter.
For now, Postecoglou’s focus will lie on Thursday’s away game against Brighton in the Premier League.
