The former Arsenal midfielder has highlighted one player that is playing the wrong role under manager Mikel Arteta.
Kai Havertz is not playing in his best position at Arsenal, according to Paul Merson.
Havertz has scored in his last two games for Arsenal, including the opener in Wednesday’s 6-0 Champions League win over Lens. The 24-year-old now has three goals and one assist in 21 games for the Gunners.
Since his £65 million summer arrival from Chelsea, Havertz has played mostly as a midfielder. He was deployed again in midfield during the Lens game, alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard
“Havertz is a confidence player and he’s playing with confidence right now,” Merson said on Sky Sports.
“I thought he was the best player on the pitch tonight. He was elegant, he picked the right passes, and made the right decisions. He’s a top player. I don’t think he’s playing in the right position but he’s still a top player.”
In his last season at Chelsea, Havertz played in central attack, midfield, and on the right flank. 29 of his 47 appearances came as a center-forward. He scored nine goals in total and dished out one assist.
The former Bayer Leverkusen star also played as a left-back for Germany during the recent international break.
Nevertheless, Havertz appears to have turned a corner after a shaky start at Arsenal. He will hope to carry on his good form on Saturday when the Gunners face Wolves in the Premier League.
