Neville says there is no way one Man Utd star should still be at the club

The former Red Devils defender ripped into one of the players before the Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial should not still be a Manchester United player, according to Gary Neville.

Neville, who spent his entire playing career in the United defense, is adamant there is ‘no way’ Martial should ever spearhead the club’s attack.

His staunch remarks came before the 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle. Martial started as a center-forward in the game. Yet, the Frenchman had almost no presence up front, with only 22 touches of the ball and a single shot. He came off in the 64th minute for Rasmus Hojlund.

‘Nine years and we still can’t get him out of the club’

“When you hear that stat that a guy [Martial] has been at the club nine years, a goalscorer that cost £50 million, £60m, £70m, has scored basically 89 goals in nine years and we still can’t get him out of the club, I don’t think we are being too harsh,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“I don’t think we’re being harsh enough.

“The failings of the football department and recruitment is just absolutely incredible. They’re human beings at the end of the day and no one wants to go on the pitch, play badly, and not achieve their standards. Nobody wants to be injured.

“So I accept all those factors but the reality is there is no way he should still be leading the line at Man United in any competition, even the Carabao Cup.

“It’s where the club is at the moment. They don’t have a center forward apart from the young lad Hojlund, who I think has real promise but he needs experience alongside him.

“But he’s come into the club and been asked to be the real thing and I feel for him a little bit. I don’t feel for Anthony Martial because he’s been here a long time.”

United will be back in action on Saturday away to Fulham in the Premier League.
