Chelsea: Pochettino admits transfer "mistakes" under Boehly

The Blues have spent over £1billion since Boehly’s takeover in May 2022.

Chelsea’s tumultuous 2023-24 Premier League campaign, marked by a significant overhaul of the squad, has brought the club’s performance and transfers under scrutiny. Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has openly acknowledged the “mistakes” made in the club’s recent transfers.

Under the ownership of Todd Boehly, who assumed control in the summer of 2022, Chelsea underwent a substantial transformation, both in the playing squad and in the managerial ranks.

Pochettino was appointed to lead the team, succeeding caretaker manager Frank Lampard, who took the reins after Graham Potter’s departure last season. For Pochettino, it marked his return to English football since his tenure with Tottenham ended in November 2019.

During Boehly’s ownership, spanning three transfer windows, Chelsea invested over £1 billion in fees for new players. While the club offset some of this expenditure with player sales, including notable names like Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, and Christian Pulisic, they have struggled to climb the Premier League table this season.

In a press conference previewing Chelsea’s Carabao Cup match against Blackburn Rovers, Pochettino said: “You have to be quiet and be strong. And not to lose your balance, because it is easy to blame or say something that is going to affect other people and lead to division in the club. The important thing is to trust the ideas, the judgment and analysis of why certain things have not happened.

“To help the organisation to be better and to improve, and not to make the same mistakes again. The most important thing is to learn from the mistakes.”
