Brazil’s all-time top scorer faces another long spell on the sidelines following his latest injury setback.
Brazilian football star Neymar could be out for around eight months, according to a report from ESPN Brasil.
The 31-year-old has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee. He got injured during Brazil’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Uruguay on Tuesday. The injury occurred when he tripped and fell in the 44th minute of the match, leading to his removal from the field on a stretcher.
The typical recovery period for this type of injury takes between nine and 12 months. Yet, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has projected that Neymar might return in eight months instead. This could make him available for the 2024 Copa America, which starts next summer on June 20.
In an emotional message on his social media platforms, Neymar expressed his sadness and the need for support, saying, “It’s a very sad moment, the worst. I know I’m strong, but this time I’m going to need my family and friends even more.
“It’s not easy to go through injury and surgery. Imagine going through it all again after 4 months of recovery.”
This setback follows Neymar’s recent recovery from a right ankle injury.
The former Barcelona star only joined Saudi Arabian team Al Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain in August for a €90 million fee.
