Jose Mourinho explains decision to leave Inter after 2010 treble

The Portuguese manager joined Real Madrid after the biggest achievement of his career.

Jose Mourinho admits he couldn’t reject an offer from the “biggest club in the world” after winning the treble with Inter.

Mourinho arrived at Inter on the back of a legendary career at Chelsea. Expectations were high from the ‘Special One’, but he managed to exceed them by leading the club to a historic treble in 2010.

The Nerazzurri fans, however, were rocked by the news of Mourinho’s departure only days after beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. In a new interview with Sky Italia, Mourinho has opened up on his decision to leave San Siro.

“I could have gone to Real Madrid after my first season with Inter, but I had signed to stay more than a year,” the Roma manager said.

“The opportunity came for the second time and I wanted to go, it was a moment in my career where I told myself I had to. They’re the biggest club in the world, but I wanted to finish at Inter by winning the Serie A title.”

Mourinho’s three-year spell at Real Madrid was marked by his iconic rivalry with Pep Guardiola. At Santiago Bernabeu, he won the La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup before leaving the club in 2013.

He added: “I refused to sign the contract with Real Madrid before the final against Bayern Munich, but I was afraid to go back to Milan because of the emotions.”
