The Spurs reached the top of the Premier League table with another away win.
Tottenham defeated Luton Town 1-0 in their Premier League game on Saturday.
The Spurs played the entire second half with ten players after Yves Bissouma was sent off with a straight red card just before the break. But a 52nd-minute goal from Micky van de Ven was enough for Ange Postecoglou’s men to claim the three points.
Cristian Romero was among Tottenham’s best players as they held on to their lead throughout the second period. The Argentina international won 11 out of 12 duels while registering an 89% passing accuracy.
Speaking after the game, Postecoglou said of Tottenham’s defensive stability: “A big part of that is Romero. He makes them (the rest of the backline who had never or barely played in the Premier League) feel like they belong and that they can flourish.
“He’s an outstanding defender, someone you want in your team. Ridiculous bravery.”
A reporter then jokingly asked Postecoglou about Lionel Messi‘s comments about Romero being the best defender in the world, with the Tottenham manager responding: “He’s a good judge.”
Romero came under pressure after an underwhelming display against Arsenal in September. But the Argentine’s fantastic performances against Liverpool and Luton Town have re-established his place as one of Tottenham’s key defenders.
