The Argentina international is sidelined after suffering a recurrence of one of his previous injuries.

Lisandro Martinez will stay out of action for “an extended period” after suffering a foot injury, according to Manchester United.

Martinez was stretched out with a foot injury during a Europa League game toward the end of the last season. The Argentine centre-back returned to United’s squad before their pre-season campaign in the summer. But it seems that he has now suffered a recurrence of the same foot injury.

“Lisandro Martinez will be out of action for an extended period due to an aggravation of the foot injury he suffered in April,” the club’s statement reads. “It has now been determined that he needs a period on the sidelines for recovery and rehabilitation. Assessment is ongoing to decide next steps.”

Martinez is expected to remain sidelined for around three months after the new injury setback. The 25-year-old’s absence is a major squad blow for United, who are slowly recovering from an ongoing injury crisis.

With Luke Shaw also being out with an injury, Erik ten Hag will have to choose between Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof to cover for Martinez’s absence.

United will return to the Premier League to host Crystal Palace on Saturday before meeting Galatasaray in the Champions League three days later.
