As the AFCON qualifiers enter its final matchday, we take a look at the most exciting games to watch across the continent.

As the Africa Cup of Nations (CAF) 2023 approaches, football fans across Africa are gearing up for the thrilling final round of qualifiers.

With only nine spots left in this prestigious tournament, the competition is fierce, and every match counts.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at five key fixtures where the stakes are at an all-time high.

DR Congo vs. Sudan

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s journey in Group I started on a rocky path, with 0 points after their first two games. However, the appointment of Sebastien Desarbre as head coach brought an immediate turnaround, with the Leopards securing a 3-0 win over Mauritania and a 2-0 victory over Gabon.

Facing Sudan won’t be a walk in the park, but the Leopards hope that home ground advantage in Kinshasa will work in their favor.

Cameroon vs. Burundi

In Group C, football giants Cameroon will face off against the aspiring Burundi team. Cameroon boasts an impressive five-time championship history, while Burundi dreams of making its second appearance in the competition.

Both teams are closely tied with 4 points, making this match a do-or-die situation. The loser will automatically miss out on a trip to Cote d’Ivoire. Cameroon’s hopes rest on the goalkeeping prowess of André Onana, who has come out of international retirement to join the squad.

Veteran striker Vincent Aboubakar will seek to capitalize on the support of his home crowd in Garoua. Meanwhile, Burundi will look to dangermen Bon Fils Caleb and Saido Berahino for a winning performance.

Mauritania vs. Gabon

Group I continues to deliver intense matchups, with Mauritania and Gabon locked in a tight race. These two sides are equal on points and separated only by goal difference. When they meet in Nouakchott, Mauritania, expect a battle where both teams will leave everything on the field. Gabon will look to the experience of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, although they’ll miss the services of Andre Poko and Lloyd Palun.

Angola vs. Madagascar

Another pivotal fixture in Group E features Angola against Madagascar. While Madagascar is already out of contention, they have the potential to spoil the party for Ghana. The Palancas Negras trail Ghana by a single point, and if they win while Ghana loses to CAR, it could lead to a stunning upset in the group.

Ghana vs. Central African Republic

Group E presents a tricky situation for Ghana, who lead with nine points but face a determined Central African Republic (CAR) side just two points behind. CAR is eager to secure its first-ever AFCON appearance, while the four-time champion Black Stars need only a draw at home in Kumasi to advance.
