The Blues have signed one of the Premier League’s most promising midfielders.

Cole Palmer’s £45 move from Manchester City has generated excitement among Chelsea fans, but the big question is, where will he fit in at Stamford Bridge?

As Mauricio Pochettino looks to find his optimal midfield setup, let’s examine three possible roles for Palmer in Chelsea’s lineup.

More competition for Sterling?

Cole Palmer possesses the technical skills and dribbling ability that could make him a valuable asset as a wide forward. He’s shown a preference for the right side of attack, cutting inside onto his stronger left foot to deliver crosses or take shots.

Palmer’s impressive dribbling stats in the 2022-23 season indicate his ability to glide past opponents effortlessly, a trait that could align with the expectations for a wide forward.

However, Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling has been occupying the right side of the front three under manager Mauricio Pochettino, and his early-season form and experience may limit Palmer’s playing time in that position. With Chelsea’s focus on immediate success and trophy hunting, competition for starting spots is fierce.

Switching to the left-hand side

Palmer also has experience playing on the left side of attack during his time at Manchester City, albeit with slightly less comfort.

This position had him tending to move around the outside rather than toward the goal. Chelsea has multiple options for this role, including Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, and Carney Chukwuemeka. Chukwuemeka’s injury and concerns about Mudryk’s performance might open up opportunities for Palmer.

Palmer in central midfield

During his time with England U21s, Cole Palmer demonstrated his adaptability by excelling in a deeper role in central midfield.

The youngster’s performances showcased his ability to demand the ball, turn, and drive through midfield, hinting at potential as a number eight. However, Chelsea has heavily invested in central midfield options, making it unlikely for Palmer to step in immediately.

Yet, Pochettino’s tactical flexibility could see Palmer being used as an inside-left player, adding an extra body to the central midfield when necessary. Chelsea’s 3-4-2-1 formation may require an additional player in central positions against teams that attempt to overload the midfield, making an inside-left role suitable for Palmer.
