The USMNT star was on the verge of completing a £20m move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea pulled out of a deal to sign Tyler Adams despite having an agreement in place with both the player and Leeds United.
Widespread reports across the English media claimed the player was on his way to becoming Chelsea’s new signing earlier this week.
Adams reportedly completed his medical at Chelsea too. But the deal is called off after Chelsea’s decision not to activate his £20m release clause.
According to Daily Express, the Blues’ unexpected U-turn is related to their ongoing efforts to complete a move for Moises Caicedo.
A crazy transfer saga has seen Caicedo rejecting a move to Liverpool despite the Reds having a £111m agreement in place with Brighton.
Chelsea were unwilling to meet Brighton’s demand for the player, almost getting hijacked by Liverpool. However, it seems the Blues have pulled out of the move for Adams to possibly match the Reds’ offer. They will most likely re-enter negotiations with Brighton in the coming days.
Adams, on the other hand, will return to Leeds United, who have started the new season in the Championship. However, his relatively cheap release clause could tempt other clubs to push for his signing before the transfer window deadline.
