The Gunners took first blood for the new season against Manchester City by beating the reigning Premier League champions in the Community Shield.

Erling Haaland’s father, Alfe Inge, mocked Arsenal’s title credentials on social media after their Community Shield success over his son’s team, Manchester City.

The Community Shield on Sunday saw Arsenal win in a dramatic penalty shootout. Despite Manchester City’s Cole Palmer opening the scoring in the 77th minute, Leandro Trossard’s deflected injury-time strike leveled the scoreline at 1-1. It forced the match at Wembley into penalties, which Arsenal won 4-1.

Erling Haaland, on the other hand, had a quiet game. The striker came off in the 64th minute for Palmer. As he left the pitch, he responded to the Arsenal fans who jeered him off by holding up three fingers – a reminder of City’s treble success last season.

Later on Sunday, Alfe Inge snipped back at the Arsenal supporters himself. He took to Twitter with the message: “Well done Arsenal, great win. You must be favourites for the league now.”

Pep Guardiola, despite the defeat, remained confident in Haaland’s ability. The City manager praised the Norwegian’s winning mentality and physicality. He also backed him to replicate his 52-goal haul from last season.

Furthermore, Guardiola said he expects Haaland to be in better condition for City’s Premier League opener against Burnley on Friday.
