The final round of the group stage is set to offer a number of thrilling matches.
As the group stage of the Women’s World Cup nears its conclusion, teams are battling fiercely to secure their place in the last-16 round.
Let’s take a look at what each group requires to advance further in the tournament.
Group A
Switzerland and Norway have already booked their spots in the round of 16. Switzerland’s goalless draw against New Zealand was enough to secure their qualification, while Norway’s dominant 6-0 victory over the Philippines eliminated the co-hosts.
Group B
Australia finds themselves in a precarious situation after a defeat to Nigeria. To avoid an early exit, they must defeat Canada or hope for a draw while praying for the Republic of Ireland to upset Nigeria. For Canada and Nigeria, a draw would be enough to progress, and unfortunately, the Republic of Ireland cannot qualify.
Group C
Spain and Japan have both secured their places in the last-16 round. They will now battle it out for the top spot in the group, with Spain holding a one-goal advantage in case of a draw. Costa Rica and Zambia have been eliminated from the tournament.
Group D
England is in a strong position and needs just a point against China to top the group. Denmark must at least match China’s result to qualify, while Haiti has an outside chance of progressing but needs victories for themselves and England.
Group E
The United States, despite being tested more than expected, will qualify if they avoid defeat against Portugal. Portugal, currently a point behind the top two teams, will likely need a win to advance. The Netherlands will face Vietnam and look to secure a strong victory to contend for the top spot.
Group F
France needs just a point from their final match against already-eliminated Panama to confirm their progression to the World Cup’s last-16 round. Jamaica, level on points and goal difference with France can also advance with a draw against Brazil. Brazil, on the other hand, needs a win to secure their place in the knockout stage.
Group G
Sweden has already secured their spot in the next round with victories over South Africa and Italy. Even if they lose their final game against Argentina, it would take a remarkable goal difference swing to prevent them from topping the group. Italy can ensure their progress by defeating South Africa, who, like Argentina, needs a win and favourable results in other matches to finish second.
Group H
Colombia’s dramatic 97th-minute winner against Germany ensured their top spot in the group, needing only a point against Morocco to seal the deal. Germany can qualify with a win against winless South Korea unless Morocco secures an unlikely victory by a large margin. In such a scenario, Germany may face France should Les Bleues top Group F.
