The Cameroonian star won’t wear David de Gea’s No.1 shirt next season.

Andre Onana has decided to continue wearing the No.24 jersey after joining Manchester United from Inter.

The former Ajax star completed a £48m transfer to Old Trafford after the club decided to part ways with David de Gea. Fans expected the Cameroonian star to take over the No.1 shirt, but Onana has picked another jersey.

“I just like that number. It’s my birthday. My date of birth,” Onana told United’s media when asked about selecting the No.24 shirt.

“For me it’s great, it’s beautiful. I like this shirt because [in] this shirt, this number we have done a lot and I hope it will continue.”

Onana wore No.24 at both Inter and Ajax, and he will continue to do so at Man Utd. The number represents the month and day of the 27-year-old’s birthday (2nd April).

The new United goalkeeper has linked up with his teammates during their pre-season tour in the United States. The Red Devils have found a solid start to their string of friendly matches, beating Arsenal 2-0 on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag’s men will take on Wrexham on Wednesday before meeting Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in their next friendly matches.
