The Bavarians pulled out of the transfer race for Rice earlier this summer.

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed he was keen to sign Declan Rice on a summer move.

The Bavarians showed interest in signing Rice. But, their interest cooled off when Arsenal and Manchester City joined the transfer race.

The Gunners eventually met West Ham’s £100 million demand for the midfielder, which left Bayern without one of their key transfer targets.

“It could have been an interesting addition to have a player with his character in the squad,” Tuchel said of Rice in a press conference ahead of Bayern’s pre-season tour in Tegernsee.

“He’s a good player and he went to a good club. He has a profile that I don’t think we have in the squad. It could be interesting to have it.”

Since their failed attempt to sign Rice, Bayern have focused on adding a new striker to their ranks. Harry Kane has emerged as the German giants’ No.1 target for the position, but Tottenham‘s reported asking price of £100m has prevented them from completing the transfer.

Asked about the club’s efforts to sign Kane, Tuchel added: “I will not comment on players who are not under contract with us. But we’re looking at this position. If we’re convinced a player would help us, then we go all in.”

According to Sky Sports, a loan move for Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez is Bayern’s “plan B” in case they fail to sign Kane ahead of the next season.
