The Dutch club shared a promising update on Edwin van der Sar’s condition.

Edwin van der Sar’s wife, Annemarie, announced the Dutchman is in stable condition and out of immediate danger on Tuesday.

In a statement relayed on the official AFC Ajax website, Annemarie said: “Edwin is still in the intensive care unit, but is stable. He is not in life-threatening danger. Every time we get to visit him, he’s communicative. We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop.”

Van der Sar was admitted to a hospital in Split, Croatia on Friday. The 52-year-old experienced bleeding around his brain during his vacation in the country.

The former goalkeeper quit his role as Ajax’s chief executive in May following a third-place finish in last season’s Eredivisie. The result meant the club failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009. He had been part of the Ajax board since 2012. He rejoined his boyhood team a year after retiring from professional football in 2011.

Before his retirement, Van der Sar enjoyed a stellar 21-season playing career. He played for Ajax, Juventus, Fulham, and Manchester United.

The four-time Dutch Goalkeeper of the Year won 27 major club honors. These included two Champions League titles, four Eredivisie crowns, and four Premier League titles. He also earned 130 caps with the Netherlands national team.
