The Hungarian star can’t wait to make his Liverpool debut at Anfield.

Liverpool has officially announced the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old Hungarian midfielder has committed to a five-year contract with the Reds, becoming their second acquisition this summer alongside Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton. Liverpool exercised Szoboszlai’s £60 million release clause before its expiration on June 30.

Newcastle had previously expressed interest in the midfielder, but they withdrew from the race due to Szoboszlai’s interest in joining the Reds.

“It’s really, really good. I enjoyed the last [few] days and I’m looking forward to knowing everybody better,” Liverpool’s new No.8 said.

“The last three or four days went really long; it was not that easy. But at the end I’m here, I’m happy and I can’t wait to get started. [A] really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me, it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.”

Szoboszlai’s move marks the conclusion of his successful tenure at Leipzig, which began in December 2020 following his £17 million transfer from Red Bull Salzburg. Despite a lengthy injury layoff, he made a significant impact upon his return, helping Leipzig claim the DFB-Pokal trophy for two consecutive seasons.

With 32 international appearances for Hungary, Szoboszlai also captained his national team after Adam Szalai’s resignation. One of his notable achievements was scoring the winning penalty against England in a memorable 1-0 victory last June.

Szoboszlai will join his new teammates when Liverpool resumes pre-season training next week. As the Reds aim to bounce back from a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and secure a spot in the Champions League, the club remains active in the transfer market. Khephren Thuram is rumoured to be another midfield target, while a centre-back signing, potentially Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio, could also be on the agenda.
