Three players will come off the books on the Manchester United payroll as their respective contracts will have expired by the weekend.

Manchester United players David de Gea, Phil Jones, and Axel Tuanzebe’s contracts at Old Trafford will expire on Friday.

While Jones and Tuanzebe’s futures are certain, De Gea’s future at the club remains uncertain. Manchester United are yet to decide if the 32-year-old has a future.

According to BBC, a framework of a contract extension that had been agreed was subsequently changed. For now, both sides have stepped back from talks. They’re reflecting on the circumstances and what to do next.

De Gea has donned the Red Devils jersey for the past 12 years. The Spaniard has made 545 appearances and kept 190 clean sheets. On Wednesday, he responded to the speculation about him on Twitter by posting a yawning emoji.

Last season, De Gea won the second Premier League Golden Glove of his career. The goalkeeper registered 17 clean sheets and conceded 43 goals in 38 games. His efforts helped United secure a third-place finish, ensuring Champions League football for the 2023/24 campaign.

From Saturday, De Gea can sign for any other club. The Spaniard has been free to accept a pre-contract agreement with a non-English club since January.

If De Gea does leave, Andre Onana could arrive as a replacement. United have held “tentative discussions” with Inter Milan for the goalkeeper. But as keen as they may be, a limited transfer budget could derail any move.
