The Italian media tycoon and politician Silvio Berlusconi, nicknamed ‘The Knight’ (‘Il Cavaliere’), has passed away.
Silvio Berlusconi, the former owner of AC Milan football club and ex-Italian prime minister, has died at the age of 86. AC Monza, the club he recently owned, has confirmed the news on social media.
He passed away at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, where he had been receiving treatment for a lung infection linked to chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.
Berlusconi was a flamboyant politician who led three Italian governments between 1994 and 2011. He was renowned for his media empire and ownership of AC Milan.
The 86-year-old owned AC Milan from 1986 to 2017. Under his stewardship, the Red and Blacks won five European Cup/Champions League trophies and eight Serie A titles. After selling his hometown club, he took control of Monza in 2018, leading them from Serie C to Serie A, where they just completed their first top-flight campaign with an 11th-place finish.
Berlusconi remained active in politics until his death, despite numerous scandals and a tax fraud conviction. He is survived by five children.
