The Red Devils make a slow start to the final part of the campaign.
Newcastle defeated Manchester United 2-0 in their Premier League game on Sunday. The Red Devils stayed winless for the third consecutive match after an underwhelming display at St. James’ Park.
A top-four statement from Newcastle!
Newcastle made a solid start to the game as Man Utd struggled to find their rhythm.
The hosts created several chances through Alan Saint-Maximin and Jacob Murphy but didn’t manage to convert them. David De Gea then made an incredible double save to deny Alexander Isak and Joe Willock.
The Red Devils kept their clean sheet until the end of the first half but came under pressure soon after the break.
Erik ten Hag brought in Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial, but that wasn’t enough to inspire United’s attacking line to push for goals.
Newcastle finally broke the deadlock when Willock converted Saint-Maximin’s assist with a header five minutes after the hour-mark.
United failed to bounce back after conceding the opener as Newcastle continued their relentless pressing.
The hosts then sealed the three points when Callum Wilson made it 2-0 in the 88th minute. Kieran Trippier’s fantastic free kick found Wilson, who smashed it past De Gea with a precise header.
The victory puts Newcastle above Man Utd at the second spot in the Premier League table. Ten Hag’s side will take on Brentford in their next league game.
