Deschamps reveals when he will announce the new France captain

The former world champions are in need of a new skipper after Hugo Lloris retired at the end of the World Cup.

France manager Didier Deschamps has said he is yet to decide who will become the new national team captain, but expects a decision by Thursday at the latest.

Hugo Lloris’ retirement from international football has left France without a captain. In an interview with Telefoot last week, the Tottenham goalkeeper backed Kylian Mbappe to succeed him.

“I’m going to use these first few days with the group to discuss it with the players concerned,” Deschamps said about the next France captain in a press conference on Tuesday.

“Obviously, Kylian is one of those players. So, you’ll know a bit more the next time I see you. In other words, the day before the game [against the Netherlands], on Thursday.

“I think if he [Mbappe] has one quality, in addition to all his other qualities, it’s that he’s someone who is pretty good, very good at communication. So, I don’t think that’s a problem on that side. But, well, I can’t tell you anymore because I haven’t decided today.”

Mbappe captained Paris Saint-Germain during Sunday’s surprise 2-0 home defeat to Rennes.

The 24-year-old striker has already won 66 caps, scored 33 international goals, and won the World Cup with France back in 2018.

Les Blues begin their Group B Euro 2024 qualifying campaign at home to the Netherlands on Friday. They later visit Ireland in Dublin next Monday.
