Real Madrid offer a golden opportunity to Barcelona to increase their lead at the top of the La Liga table.
Mallorca defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in their La Liga game on Sunday. The hosts continued their brilliant home record as Blancos suffered their second defeat in five games.
A frustrating defeat for Real Madrid
Real Madrid found a slow start to the game, with Mallorca looking for an early breakthrough. Surprisingly, the hosts got just what they wanted in the 13th minute.
A searching cross from Dani Rodriguez found its way into the back of the net after bouncing off Nacho’s head. The hosts went ahead as Real Madrid tried to find a quick comeback into the game.
Mallorca managed to control Real Madrid by showing incredible physicality in midfield. The Blancos rarely found spaces between their opponents’ lines, failing to register a single shot on target before the break.
Real Madrid doubled down on their attacks at the beginning of the second period. The Blancos finally found a perfect chance to score the equalizer from the penalty spot.
However, Marco Asensio missed the penalty, giving Mallorca a significant morale boost for the remainder of the second half. The hosts continued their impressive defending while Real Madrid struggled to change the course of the game through their substitutions.
The Blancos came close to scoring a few more times, but they weren’t able to escape the defeat at the Iberostar Stadium.
Barcelona now have the chance to go eight points clear at the top of the table if they manage to beat Sevilla later tonight.
