Xavi Hernandez’s men stay at the top of the La Liga table after claiming another hard-fought victory.
Barcelona defeated Girona 1-0 in their La Liga game on Saturday. The hosts kept Barca at bay for most of the game but couldn’t prevent the Catalans’ victory.
Third 1-0 win in a row!
Barca came into the game on the back of a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey. Unlike that game, however, Xavi’s side struggled to create dangerous chances early on.
The Catalans dominated the possession in the first period but their attacks lacked enough edge to break Girona’s resistance. The hosts even pushed forward to open the scoring themselves but failed to get past Barca’s backline.
Barcelona looked much-better as soon as the second period started. Despite losing Ousmane Dembele to an injury, the Catalans managed to maintain the pressure through Jordi Alba down the left-hand side.
The Spanish defender finally made his mark by providing an assist for Pedri just before the hour mark. Following a precise low-cross, the 20-year-old nodded the ball home from close range to put his side ahead.
Barcelona pushed hard to double their lead in the final 20 minutes, with Girona also missing a golden chance toward the end of the game.
None of those efforts were successful as Barca continued their eight-game winning streak with another narrow victory. The Catalans go six points clear at the top of the La Liga table, preparing to meet Real Betis in the next match.
