The Argentine icon has confirmed the upcoming World Cup final will be his last game for the Albiceleste.
Argentina star Cristian Romero hopes Lionel Messi will continue his international career beyond the ongoing World Cup.
Messi has spent a wonderful tournament so far in Qatar, scoring five goals on Argentina’s road to the final.
The Paris Saint-Germain star is preparing to make his last attempt to clinch the World Cup title on Sunday. But Romero says his Argentina teammates will try to change Messi’s mind about leaving the national team.
“I hope this is not his last World Cup,” Romero said. “This issue always comes up and we say we are going to ask him not to step down.
“It makes us very happy to have him as a partner and to have him play with us.”
Romero’s teammate Emiliano Martinez also believes Messi shouldn’t retire after the Qatar tournament.
“For me he can play until he is 50. He looks really sharp and he looks so good,” Martinez told FootballersLives.tv.
“He makes things look easy – it’s the hardest thing to do. To understand how well he hits the ball is something.
“He puts the ball there and looks at you and hits the ball top corner, if he misses he hits the post, or crossbar.
“That left foot. He is small, but so strong.”
