Luis Enrique reveals his next career plan after Spain exit

The former Spain manager spoke for the first time since his departure from the national team.

Luis Enrique wants to return to club football and feels that ‘infinite possibilities’ have opened up for him.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) opted to not extend Enrique’s contract after Spain’s World Cup exit against Morocco in the round of 16, replacing him with Under-21 boss Luis de la Fuente instead.

“My time with the national team is over, and infinite possibilities open up,” Enrique told Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos on Twitch on Monday.

“I’m in a moment in my career where I feel excited and ready to take over a club. You can work in more detail and with more precision than you can with a national team. This period [of my career] is over. Unless anything huge or interesting comes up, I’ll wait until next season.”

Enrique coached Spain over two spells between 2018 and 2022, collecting 24 wins (D11 L9) in 44 matches. He led La Roja to the Euro 2020 semi-finals and a runners-up finish in the 2021 Nations League.

The 52-year-old has previously managed Barcelona, Celta Vigo, and AS Roma at club level.
