The Red Devils are actively scanning the market for a new striker ahead of the next transfer window.

Erik ten Hag has reportedly asked Manchester United to sign Dutch striker Cody Gakpo after the World Cup.

Gakpo was among Ten Hag’s transfer targets last summer. But Man Utd’s spending on the likes of Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Antony convinced them to postpone a move for the striker.

The 23-year-old has found a fantastic start to his World Cup campaign with Netherlands. Having scored three goals in the Oranje’s group-stage games, Gakpo is the tournament’s current top scorer.

According to 90min, Gakpo’s performances have convinced Ten Hag to ask United again to sign him.

Following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, Man Utd are keeping tabs on several attacking options. But it seems Gakpo’s form has convinced them to pursue his signature after the World Cup.

Last month, the Dutch striker revealed he was close to sealing a move to Old Trafford.

“I was close to leaving. I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United,” Gakpo told the Times.

“In the end, the deal didn’t go through, which was a shame for me and my development. Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world. But also [a shame] for PSV because to transfer a player to Manchester United is a good thing for the club.

“[In the final week of the window] I had to decide if I would go to Leeds or Southampton. In the end, I stayed. But it was a stressful period.”
