A narrow win over Canada sends Belgium to the top of the Group F table.
Belgium defeated Canada 1-0 in their World Cup game on Wednesday. Canada put up a fight against Belgium in their opening match in the competition, but that wasn’t enough to stop the Red Devils from clinching a narrow win.
A hard-fought win!
Canada started the game as the better side, putting Belgium under pressure with quick transitions.
However, Belgium managed to take control of the game toward the end of the first half, scoring the opener just before halftime.
Following a perfect through pass from Toby Alderweireld, Michy Batshuayi made it 1-0 for the Red Devils.
Canada restarted their efforts to come back into the game as soon as the second half started. But Belgium managed to contain their threat with solid defence.
The Canadians found little space between Belgium’s lines while the Red Devils stayed ready to counterattack. Both sides found a few chances to score throughout the final 20 minutes. But they had to settle for the 1-0 result as they couldn’t convert any of them.
Belgium lead the Group F table after the first round, sitting two points above Croatia and Morocco, who drew 0-0 earlier today.
Roberto Martinez’s men will continue their campaign with a match against Morocco, while Canada take on Croatia.
