After a season in the Championship, Gary Cahill has pulled the curtain on a splendid professional football career.

Former Chelsea captain Gary Cahill has announced his retirement from football.

The 36-year-old defender made 22 Championship appearances for Bournemouth last season to help the Cherries win promotion to the Premier League, but didn’t get a new contract at Dean Court.

He has, therefore, decided the time is ripe to hang up his boots and move on to the next chapter of his career.

“Football is a game that has given me so much enjoyment and success and as I make the decision to hang up my boots, I can honestly say I gave it everything I had,” Cahill posted on Twitter.

“I’ve achieved things I once dreamt of, creating some incredible memories. From amazing highs like winning the Champions League and Premier League, to the privilege of captaining my country and Chelsea in an FA Cup-winning team.

“I’ve had time to consider my options and after much deliberation and reflection, I feel now is the time to move on to the next stage of my career.

“Football will always be part of who I am and what I love, so this is just the end of this chapter. For me, it’s important to look forwards, not backwards, as a new chapter in my life begins.”

After spells at Aston Villa and Bolton, Cahill enjoyed a successful seven-year stay at Chelsea. The defender made 191 Premier League appearances, helping the Blues win the league title twice and six other major trophies. He also starred in the Champions League final win over Bayern Munich in 2012.

At international level, Cahill won 61 senior caps for England and represented the Three Lions at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, as well as at Euro 2016.
